From Shoes to Saffron: My Inspiring Journey into Aeroponic Saffron Farming

Gaurav’s journey started four years back when he took over his father’s shoe business, expecting a simple life continuing the family tradition. But life had different ideas. Struggling with family debts and the declining shoe business, Gaurav felt the need for a change. He was determined to carve a path in the business world, so he explored new opportunities for more profitable ventures.

In the midst of Solan’s bustling mushroom farming scene, Gaurav’s quest for something unique led him to an unexpected revelation: the potential of cultivating saffron using aeroponics. While saffron was traditionally linked with Kashmir, Gaurav spotted an opportunity to introduce this ‘red gold’ to the hills of Himachal Pradesh.

Aeroponics, a groundbreaking method popular in Iran and Israel, involves growing plants without soil. Fascinated by the idea of nurturing saffron in a controlled, chemical-free setting, Gaurav began a journey of exploration and study. With a loan of Rs 10 lakh and support from the government’s startup initiative, he established Shoolini Saffron, his aeroponic saffron farm.

The main hurdle was recreating the precise environmental settings needed for saffron farming. Solan’s weather was nothing like that of Kashmir, the usual saffron-growing region in India. However, Gaurav didn’t let this deter him. He employed a controlled environment lab to manage the temperature and guarantee the perfect conditions for saffron to flourish.

The journey to triumph wasn’t smooth sailing. Gaurav encountered problems like fungal attacks, yet his resolve remained strong. Facing setbacks head-on, he quickly adapted and tackled challenges, ensuring his saffron crop stayed healthy and vibrant.

After dedicating eight months of hard work, Gaurav reaped 500 grams of saffron, selling it successfully at an impressive rate of Rs 500 per gram, surpassing the standard market prices. His saffron, grown without chemicals using aeroponics, grabbed considerable attention and demand in the market.

What distinguishes Gaurav’s initiative is its availability throughout the year, showcasing the benefits of aeroponic farming. Gaurav’s achievements haven’t just brought financial gains but have also sparked inspiration within his community. Five individuals have already apprenticed under him to learn the techniques of aeroponic saffron farming, with more expressing interest regularly.
